Raising money for Leukaemia
Politicians Riding to Raise Money for Childhood Leukaemia Research (PDF 1.64 M) (press release) 6 May 2004
The Millennium Foundation
The Millennium Foundation is the primary fundraising body for Westmead Hospital Campus supporting The Westmead Millennium Institute and Westmead Hospital, two key institutions with international reputations of expertise across the fields of medicine and science.
The Westmead Millennium Institute is recognised internationally as world leader in many areas of medical research. The research conducted at the Institute assists the quality of human life on a global scale, and the Foundation is proud of its ability to support this dynamic organisation.
The Foundation raises funds for research teams to continue the ongoing search for cures and treatments for a variety of diseases and viruses - including: Leukaemia, Melanoma, Breast and prostate cancer, Hepatitis and other liver disease, Heart disease, HIV/AIDS and other viral disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Asthma, Diabetes, Kidney and pancreas, Ovarian Cancer and infectious diseases.
The Foundation also supports Westmead Hospital, the largest teaching hospital in the southern hemisphere. The hospital provides a unique link between the laboratories of our research centres and the wards and clinics at the 'coal-face' of our hospital. We support the hospital in a variety of ways, from assisting in the fundraising for critical medical equipment to refurbishing entire wards for the comfort of patients and staff.
Over past four years, the Millennium Foundation has dispersed $5.3m into medical research, the construction of dedicated research facilities and the procurement of life-saving equipment. Our principal mission is to raise funds and enhance community awareness in support of medical research and related health care at Westmead Hospital - in essence we raise the funds to find the cures to save lives.
Childhood leukaemia research at Westmead Millennium Institute
Although leukaemia is a significant cancer in adults, it is the most common form of childhood cancer and a major cause of death in children. Despite being responsive to chemotherapy, about one quarter of children with acute leukaemia develop a relapse of their disease following treatment. Although some of these patients can be saved with bone marrow transplantation, the majority will die of leukaemia. To try to improve the outcome for patients with leukaemia, the leukaemia research group at Westmead Millennium Institute is involved in research projects that range from the study of the underlying biology of the disease to investigating new treatment strategies.
