Federal MPs ditch their suits for lycra to raise money for kids with cancer

March 2005

On the 30th March nine federal politicians will set off on a 1000km bike ride over ten days to raise money for childhood leukaemia research at Westmead Hospital. The politicians riding to raise money for leukaemia research include John Anderson, Tony Abbott, Jim Lloyd, Sussan Ley, Jackie Kelly, Bob Baldwin, Phil Barresi, Senator Guy Barnett and Louise Markus.

Each year the Pollie Pedal charity bike rides raises money for various Australian charities. Last year the Pollie Pedal raised $140 000 towards building a new leukaemia research laboratory at Westmead Hospital. Pollie Pedal this year needs to raise more than $100 000 to complete the lab.

The ten-day, 1000km ride will start in Sydney on Wednesday 30th March and travel through the NSW towns of Wollombi, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Scone, Quirindi, Gunnedah, Tamworth, Maitland, the Central Coast and finish at Westmead Hospital on Friday 8th April.

Leukaemia is the most common form of childhood cancer and a major cause of death in children. About one-quarter of children with acute leukaemia develop a relapse of the disease and many die. The leukaemia research group at the Westmead Millennium Institute is working to save the lives of kids with leukaemia. Please help Pollie Pedal to raise much needed funds to build the researchers a new laboratory and help them continue their important work. Money raise for Pollie Pedal will go to the Millennium Foundation Westmead, which is the fundraising body for Westmead Hospital. It is a registered charity and all donations over $2 are tax deductible.

WARRINGAH RESIDENTS

Donations from the Warringah Community will go to the Manly-based Bear Cottage to help provide respite care for terminally ill children and their families. Bear Cottage is the only children's hospice in NSW and provides specialist medical care for children. Bear Cottage helps children throughout NSW and has cared for more than 200 children and their families. Of these children more than 70 have died and almost half chose to die with the support of staff at Bear Cottage. Please help the dedicated staff continue to provide this much needed help to sick children and their families. Bear Cottage relies solely on community donations and as part of the Children's Hospital at Westmead, it is a registered charity. Donations greater than $2 are tax deductible.
