Who are we raising money for?

The Millennium Foundation

The Millennium Foundation is the primary fundraising body for Westmead Hospital Campus supporting Westmead Millennium Institute and Westmead Hospital, two key institutions with international reputations for expertise in the fields of medicine and science.

Westmead Millennium Institute (WMI) is recognised internationally as a world leader in many areas of medical research. The research conducted at the Institute assists the quality of human life on a global scale, and the Foundation is proud of its ability to support this organisation.

The Foundation raises funds for research teams to continue the ongoing search for cures and treatments for a variety of diseases and viruses including leukaemia, melanoma, breast and prostate cancer, hepatitis, liver disease, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, asthma, diabetes, kidney and pancreas, ovarian cancer and infectious diseases.

The Foundation also supports Westmead Hospital, the largest teaching hospital in the Southern Hemisphere. The hospital provides a unique link between the laboratories of our research centres and the wards and clinics at the 'coal-face' of our hospital. We support the hospital in a variety of ways, from assisting in the fundraising for critical medical equipment to refurbishing entire wards for the comfort of patients and staff.

Our principal mission is to raise funds and enhance community awareness in support of medical research and related health care at Westmead Hospital - in essence we raise the funds to find the cures to save lives.

Diabetes Research

In the last 20 years, the incidence of Australians with diabetes has trebled, it is estimated that approximately one million Australians over 25 have diabetes and many more are undiagnosed.

The disease has two types, Type 1 also known as insulin-dependant diabetes or juvenile and Type 2 known as non-insulin or maturity onset diabetes. There is currently no cure. The centre for Transplantation and Renal Research (part of WMI) is conducting research into new methods of treating type 1 diabetes, as well as investigating ways of reducing and reversing the renal damage caused by diabetes. These researchers have developed new techniques to be able to isolate individual islet cells from donor organs, transplanting these cells into patients that fulfil strict criteria. This eliminates the need for multiple insulin injections.

Funds raised by Pollie Pedal will help these researchers continue working to find a cure.
